An immersive, subtle and thoroughly transformational training diving deep into the meditative practice of yin yoga
In person at Merchant City Yoga
“The softest thing in the world
Rides roughshod over the strongest.
No-thing enters no-space.
This teaches me the benefit of no-action.”
Tao te Ching, 43
Yin yoga is a slow and meditative practice, both gentle and profound. In some ways it may seem simpler than more dynamic styles of postural yoga, but like all simple things it belies a subtlety and deep intricacy. As we work with the body in non-forceful ways, using yielding rather than effort, we can dive deep into our minds and bodies and explore new ways of being.
Rest is essential. Rest gives us space to be. It allows us to resist all that which confines us and takes us away from who we really are. It lets us feel our way into ways of being that are truly nourishing and generative.
What does this training offer?
Explore traditional and modern approaches to yin yoga through inclusive and accessible postural practice grounded in biomechanics and subtle anatomy, meditative somatic awareness and subtle approaches to breath and energy.
Learn how to guide practice by holding space for personal experience and support varied human bodies and minds through adaptations, assists, and ‘yin language’.
Dive into subtle anatomy from yogic and TCM perspectives, working with energy, awareness, and breath.
What is special about this training?
My practice takes a trauma-informed and inclusive approach that is immersed in a meditative and philosophical mood, to cultivate a deep and well-rounded practice that is grounded in the personal, real-life experience of body and mind.
My approach to yin seeks to cultivate subtle awareness and the ability to soften into our experience with tenderness, care and curiosity, to dive deep into the layers of body and mind and connect to corners that otherwise go unseen.

-
For me, teaching yin (and yoga generally) goes way beyond the physical. Yes, we’ll explore arrangements of the body, biomechanics, sequencing, and how to support the physical experience. But this training is about so much more - it’s about understanding what is going on underneath the surface, in the depths of the energetic levels of our being, how mind and heart are woven through the textures of our physical field.
-
This training will help you refine your ability to deeply explore what is going on in body and mind. We’ll enquire into the difference between doing and allowing - and how that allows us to perceive, understand, and create a relationship with how our sense of self plays out in our bodies and our lives. This is especially relevant to yin, but in fact ripples out into all forms of yoga practice, from dynamic āsana styles to meditation, philosophy and ethics, and life off the mat.
-
We’ll practice deep and nuanced observation, so that you can see what’s going on in students’ bodies as well as their energies, how they can be present, how they can soften, and crucially, how we as teachers can respond and support practitioners’ experience both physically and energetically. We’ll explore the various tools yoga teachers can use, from physical cueing, use of language, pace, rhythm, tone, and atmosphere.
