Asana Lab

Is there just one correct way to do an asana?

I believe it’s more useful to ask what dynamics are happening in the shape, and how that relates to our own anatomy, and where we find ourselves in space.

Living In The World - The Bhagavad Gita

The beautiful yoga text, the Bhagavad Gita, is a guide to finding ourselves amongst the messiness of the world. In the face of good and bad, apathy, violence, and disconnection, there is a path and a practice that helps us to see clearly, to know ourselves and how we fit into it all.

Vinyasa Skillz! 2024

Vinyasa classes are all about flow, and so we often move through common shapes without exploring the detail. The essential, most foundational moves hold the key to the grace and power we’re seeking to find in a dynamic practice. More than that, when we repeat these moves without finding how they work best in our own body, they can end up being frustrating, and at worst injurious.

This course demystifies vinyasa’s hit moves - gives you the skill and insight into what’s really going on so you can feel confident in your practice and build on strong foundations.

Vinyasa Skillz 2022

booking coming soon

This course is designed to address all the questions about vinyasa yoga that come up when you go to regular classes, in a forum conducive to detailed exploration, discussion, and troubleshooting.
Like:
“what do I do if my wrists hurt in downward facing dog?”
“how do I move from chaturanga to updog?”
“how can I use vinyasas to generate more energy and not make me more tired?”
“what is bandha??”

This is the nitty gritty of physical yoga practice, which deals with muscles and alignment, but also with the breath and moving energy around the body - the subtle and elusive yoga skill that often goes between the lines and more often than not isn’t explained at all.

Skill In Action - Practical teachings for living well from the Bhagavad Gita

The Bhagavad Gita is a uniquely practical yoga text. Unlike the Sutras or the Upanisads, the Gita assumes that we live in society, and that life is complicated! We are torn between our duties, our desires, our responsibilities to others, and what we feel is Right. This beautiful and rich text acknowledges the tribulations of embodied life, and offers us advice and practices to make sense of it all, to find peace, and to work out the right thing to do, even in the most bamboozling situations.

Join me over three Sunday afternoons to explore the text - with practical exercises, discussion, play, and takeaway homework booklet with ideas for exploration - to continue your contemplation in your own time.

Session one: The War Within
We meet on the Kurukṣetra, the field of action, this very body, and explore the secrets and struggles of the human heart.

Session two: How does a Yogi speak, sit, walk?
On karma, skilful action, and getting out of your own way.

Session three: The wheel of Dharma and Lokasaṅgraha
The path of the spiritual warrior, balancing acceptance with fighting against injustice.

Sacred Sound - Festive Community Kirtan

This holiday season I’m holding a special festive Kirtan in between Christmas and New Year.

This is a beautiful practice because it is so simple. You don’t need any physical ability, it’s no problem if you happen to have just consumed 27 mince pies, and you don’t even need any musical ability because honestly the voices all blend together that no one voice sticks out from the crowd.

All you need is breath and an open heart. You don’t need to know any of the mantras because we’ll go through them together - and maybe even sing something a little bit more familiar.

Kirtan Kids!

Chanting, storytelling, and play - for little yogis and their parents!

If you have kids, you know how much they love music, singing, dancing, and playing instruments. The yoga tradition has even more to offer us than the fun and feel-good effect of postures and movement, it is rich and full of beautiful sound practices and in particular the chanting (singing) of mantras, from the most simple sounds to the more elaborate poetry of Sanskrit verses.

’Kirtan’ means to rejoice and it is the practice of making sound to express joy. Kirtan Kids is a club for babies and toddlers and their parents to enjoy making sound together, playing and rejoicing!
We will make noise, sing simple mantras in English and Sanskrit, hear stories about the myths behind the mantras, move and breathe and celebrate being together!
